iPhone Ham Amateur radio

The iPhone Ham radio apps (iPhone Applications)

SSTV By Black Cat Systems
Want to display or send SSTV transmissions, without using a bulky computer? SSTV Pad lets you decode and display Ham (Amateur) Radio SSTV (Slow Scan TV) transmissions. Just connect your device to an HF radio (or even set it next to the radio’s speaker), tune in an SSTV frequency, and watch the pictures. SSTV Pad decodes all of the popular SSTV modes, including Robot, Scottie, Martin, and more.

Ham Dashboard
Ham Dashboard is designed to be useful to Radio Amateurs whilst on the move or away from home. It shows a searchable list of nearby repeaters in the UK and Ireland, along with details of input and output frequencies, a map, and a handy bearing arrow for each repeater. It also includes a basic APRS tracker that allows your position to be sent to the APRS-IS network Get it HERE

Ham Tracker
Ham Tracker allows Radio Amateurs on the move to send location updates to APRS-IS (the Internet side of APRS) from their mobile device. Once sent, your position can be tracked using services such as aprs.fi. Don’t worry though, you’re in control of your privacy and can turn off the sending of position reports at any time. Ham Tracker makes it easy to send an email containing an aprs.fi tracking link for your callsign or a map link showing your current location. Use these to tell colleagues, friends and family where you are, letting them track your progress using a web browser without them needing to phone to ask. Get it HERE

EchoLink Free
EchoLink for iPhone provides access to the EchoLink network for validated EchoLink users. You can use this app to connect to the EchoLink system from almost anywhere, using either an iPhone or an iPod touch. (For an iPod touch, you will need to plug in earphones with a microphone for full two-way capability.) iPhone users can use either a WiFi or 3G (cellular) Internet connection.

Before running the app, you must be a registered user with a callsign and password that has already been validated.

Please note that this application uses streaming audio, which cellular providers in some countries may treat as VoIP. Please check the terms of your cellular provider agreement for information about additional fees your provider might charge for VoIP usage. Get it HERE

DTMF Reader
DTMF reader decodes dtmf tones.
Very easy to use and with a log to save codes you like.
Can be used in ham radio fields, or just with your phone.

DX Cluster Client
You’ve spent countless hours and money building your station, tweaking your antennas, studying propagation…..to be ready to work the next new one, or just to rag chew with your friends. But you can’t work them if you don’t know they are on the air – once you download hamDXCluster on the App Store, you can view DX Cluster spots from anywhere there is iPhone/WiFi coverage. Just launch hamDXCluster with one touch, and you’ll see true real time spots in seconds – this is a direct telnet connection, no delays as sometimes experienced with webclusters. For less than a cup of fancy coffee, you’ll have the constant awareness of what’s on – to make your station investment pay off, again and again. Get-it-HERE

Morse Code practice Free
Ham Morse allows you to practice morse code on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. It is designed particularly for Ham radio operators and others who wish to achieve or maintain a high level of proficiency in this classic mode of communication.

GoSat Watch
Can also be used to accurately determine optimal satellite dish orientation for geostationary satellites at any location using iPhone GPS location. GoSatWatch uses multiple orbital data sets from NASA to accurately predict the location of the space station and space shuttle. This is important for tracking space shuttle missions to account for orbital maneuvers. Using the time control you can fast forward to see how the shuttle closes in and docks with the international space station. GoSatWatch makes it easy to obtain and update satellite orbital data with a single touch. No searching for and manually transferring data for an update. Comes with a database of over 200 satellites including the international space station, visible satellites, satellite radio, Iridium constellation and the space shuttle. Fully customizable to remove or add more satellites to the database. Get it HERE

iSDR Free
iSDR is the first and only software defined radio application compatible with the Apple iPhone®, iPod touch® and iPad™. iSDR is designed for experimenters, shortwave listeners, and amateur radio enthusiasts looking for a truly portable software-defined radio receiver. This app is provided free of charge as a gift to the Amateur Radio community!

PLEASE NOTE: Receiving live on-air signals using iSDR will require purchasing or constructing a “quadrature sampling detector (QSD)” RF front-end device, and connecting it between an antenna and the microphone input jack. Without a QSD RF front-end iSDR will play I/Q recordings of actual radio signals. Please visit the support web site for more information.

iSDR is NOT RECOMMENDED for use on iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2nd Gen – Although iSDR will install and launch successfully on those devices, they do not have the processing horsepower to keep up with the demands that iSDR places on the CPU. Sluggish performance and severe audio distortion may result.

When iSDR is used to receive live radio signals, receiver performance will depend largely on the quadrature sampling detector and antenna that you use.

iSDR is the only software defined receiver application for use on mobile handset devices and iPad. Despite its extreme portability the app utilizes the same digital signal processing techniques found in PC-based SDR receivers. It does frequency domain filtering using a theoretical “brick wall” sinc filter algorithm to provide steep and deep bandpass filtering. iSDR doesn’t utilize any DSP hardware, but instead uses the iOS device’s processor to implement DSP algorithms.
